Incident details

JPS Appeals to Road Users to Exercise Care (Kingston, Jamaica — August 17, 2025) JPS is issuing a strong appeal to motorists in the wake of an alarming trend in motor vehicle crashes involving its poles. Since the start of the year, motor vehicle accidents have caused 799 power outages across the island – roughly 4 crash related accidents per day. The top three parishes with the highest number of outages due to motor vehicle accidents, from January to July 2025 are: St. Catherine with 120 outages; Kingston and St. Andrew with 112 outages; and St. Elizabeth with 88 outages all due to motor vehicles crashing into poles and breaking or dislodging them. One single accident can result in thousands of customers being badly inconvenienced. Additionally, these accidents also knock down streetlight poles, plunging major corridors into darkness. As an example, in May, an accident in St. Catherine, resulted in a broken pole and caused outages in Thompson Pen Road, Lauriston, Mount Mooreland, Tryhall Heights and Keystone. A total of 2,153 customers were left without power due to that single incident. Accident in St. Ann, which destroyed a pole and other electrical infrastructure Further afield

Save phone battery

Drop screen brightness, enable low-power mode, and close background apps. Aim for one full charge to last 12+ hours.

Protect appliances

Unplug TVs, fridges and ACs to avoid surge damage when power returns. Leave one bulb on so you'll know when it's back.

Keep the fridge cold

Avoid opening it. A full freezer stays cold ~48h closed, a fridge ~4h. Fill empty space with frozen water bottles.
